What is writing? What does it do?

Writing is a creative form of expression and communication over many different platforms such as newspapers, blogs, novels, magazines, advertisements, Egyptian hieroglyphs, etc. Writing is used to persuade, to inform, to entertain, and to stir up the emotions of its readers. Writing has the power to change how readers think and feel no matter the word count. Writing has the ability to teach through pamphlets or textbooks or make its readers laugh or cry through a play. Without writing, people would lack entertainment and source of education and news.
Word choice and syntax are two important components of writing that determine the effect on a reader. If word choice and syntax are poor then the writing will not have the desired powerful message, but if word choice is precisely selected and syntax carefully arranged then the writing’s message will successfully impact its readers. Word choice and syntax vary through the different platforms, making writing even more creative.
The attractive part of writing is that it is versatile in that so many different kinds of writers can write for the different kinds of platforms. A blogger does not write the same as a 19th century novelist because the former writes short and concise while the latter writes with more details and complexity. An advertiser will hire a writer to be persuasive and informative for the advertisement while Egyptian hieroglyphs were used by scribes to tell a story through symbols.
Writing has come a long way with accessibility through history. Once writing was only available if you were a male, usually, and privileged enough to go to school and learn to write. Now in modern times anyone, no matter the race or gender, can get on social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, to share their thoughts. No matter the form of writing, whether it be a hard copy novel found at the local library or a digital book downloaded through an app store, writing will always remain powerful and never go out of style.
