Journal Reflection #3
There is a big relationship between writing, technology, and
circulation. People put their writing on
technological platforms and as a result there is a very large circulation of
their message. As explained in both readings, writing is a huge tool often used
to campaign and to gather people together on a certain cause. In the reading,
“Women’s Peace Movement,” we see how women were able to come together and form
peace camps through writing letters. In the article, we learn that a women’s
affinity group started a symbol made by weaving wool. This symbol was a web.
This web symbol was worn throughout the peace camps and was their form of
protest. Women around the 1980’s used letters and symbols like the web to
protest, spread messages, and to connect. In the article, “Occupy Wall Street,”
we see how technology is very useful for protesting and spreading messages.
Because of all the technology we have today, we are able to write about causes
and spread our messages to thousands and thousands of people over the Internet.
That is where circulation comes into play. The “Occupy Wall Street” article
mentions how protesters were able to made a hashtag on the internet,
“#occupywallstreet.” The ability to make a hashtag allows for many people to
connect, when they have never met before. It allows people to contribute and
read about that hashtag without having to be apart of a certain group or club.
. In the Wall Street article we also learn that writing and technology together
allow the ability for larger in person protests. People are able to network to
others easily and manage an in person protest. Most people today use the
Internet in order to spread important messages. Famous people, who have
millions of followers, use twitter as a platform to share their beliefs and
inform their fans. The Womens Peace Movement article proves that people have
been using writing as a protest tool for years and years. Because of
technology, we are able to circulate our writing to people all over the world.
We are able to spread messages and start campaigns. We are able to make
movements and share international news.
