The piece of writing that I decided to discuss was about an
article I read today about a brand called Glossier. It is titled “Inside
Glossier, The Beauty Startup That Just Happens to Sell Makeup.” I came across
the article while on Buzzfeed. To sum up the article, it is basically talking
about the startup of a new makeup brand that is also becoming a new trend.
Glossier’s products are known for being “barely there.” They are meant to only
enhance your features and help you achieve that perfect natural look. It also
talks about how the brand became an overnight success by making themselves hard
to get. For most of Glossier’s products, there are waitlists. By making their
products seem extra wanted, people are becoming more interested in what they
have to offer.
Because Bitzer and Edbauer have different ideas of what Rhetoric
is, they might interpret this passage differently. Bitzer, who believes that
Rhetoric writing is meant to perform some kind of task. Another factor that
Bitzer talks about is how the audience is involved when using Rhetoric writing. He states that the writer needs to be aware
of his or her audiences when using Rhetoric. The audience that the writer of
the article I read about, is aimed to people interested in the brand Glossier
or makeup in general. Bitzer also states that if the writing needs a fitting
response, the writer must prescribe it.
In the article, the writer, who was also the interviewer, is able to convince
the reader that Glossier lives up to the hype that has been created. Edbauer on
the other hand thought that Bitzer was wrong when it came to what Rhetoric is.
She believed Rhetoric was beyond exigence, audience, and constraints. She states
that the factors are much too broad to be categorized. Edbauer also talks about
public Rhetoric which is what this article is. Because the article is online,
it is able to reach many different audiences, even though it is aimed to one
specific one, which is people with the interest of beauty. Also, because the
article is online, it is accessible everywhere. Due to technology today people
are able to access things wherever they go.
