In my opinion, writing is the way that humans are able to communicate through a series of symbols that represent spoken language. Although there are many ways to represent language, like through artwork, or through objects that symbolize words or phrases, writing seems to be the most conventional way for humans to communicate through symbolization. Writing, as a whole, is a great way to preserve either religion, like with the Hebrews who consider themselves the people of the book, or a way to keep record of a civilizations existence all together. Also, writing has become a great medium for people throughout history to express certain ideas or theories that have, both negatively and positively, changed the world.
