Journal Response #1 : Lizzy Sellers

In its most literal sense, writing is the process of recording information using letters, numbers, and symbols.

Beyond that, writing can be more than just a means of passing along information. It can persuade, entertain, or inform. Writing can be used to communicate and reflect; it is an outlet used by all different types of people in all different forms and languages for expression and the articulation of thoughts and beliefs. There are different styles and techniques for writing- some are eloquent and beautiful, others factual and substantial. Writing connects people for many reasons, such as through shared beliefs and feelings. Good writing evokes the senses, immersing a reader as if they were actually present, and not just mentally processing symbols into words into meaning.

Communication: Writing’s simplest function. The use of symbols to show meaning has been used for centuries, and with the technology we have today, it has never been easier to communicate with practically anyone. Even the language barrier that once separated people and was nearly impossible to overcome is slowly being torn down by new tools that can do the work for us. All we have to do is write.
Symbols: This word can have more depth than one would think. Letters, numbers, and other symbols are used so often that it’s easy to forget that every letter is basically just a weird squiggly thing that, in our minds, we are able to take a bunch of these weird squiggly things and make words to make sentences to make meaning. Without the shared understanding of these symbols, communication through writing would not exist.
Expression: The point of writing is usually to make a point. Sure, it’s possible to write a bunch of nonsense for no reason, but more often than not, writing is meant to express some idea or emotion.
Style: There are four basic types of writings- narrative, which tells a story, descriptive, which uses beautiful language to create detail and entertain, expository, which explains a subject then supports the explanation, and persuasive, which expresses an opinion and then uses support to back up the opinion.

Creativity: Writing doesn’t have to be only factual. A writer can use their imagination to come up with anything. Fiction is popular because it allows a reader to escape into a different place to be entertained by stories that may not have happened, but are still fun to read about.
